As a digital artist, I’m often asked about the tools I use to create my artwork. While traditional art supplies will always hold a special place in my heart, the digital realm offers endless possibilities and conveniences. I love that you don’t have to be a tech guru to understand these art tools and software; they’re user-friendly for kids, tweens, and teens (or adults!). Below, I share my top three recommendations for kids and grown-ups to create vibrant, detailed illustrations without the mess.
My Top 3 Favorite
Digital Art Supplies
Best Tech for Art: iPad
Best Tech Art Accessory: Apple Pencil
Best Digital Art Software: Procreate Guide
Best Tech for Art:

Why I Recommend It
The iPad is the ultimate bridge between digital and traditional artwork. Its portability means I can take my work anywhere, from my cozy couch to my daughter's soccer practice or a peaceful park. The iPad’s high-resolution display provides me with a crisp, clear canvas, allowing me to see every detail of my work in ultra-zoom mode. The touchscreen interface makes the creation process fun and engaging, including for my daughter, who loves to draw on her own iPad.
I love that I can download various apps and tools into one device. Whether I need to edit a photo, draft a document, or finalize an illustration, the iPad supports a wide range of digital needs.
Best Tech Art Accessory:

Why I Recommend It
The Apple Pencil is my go-to tool for bringing my digital art to life. Its pressure sensitivity allows me to vary the thickness of my lines in each brush stroke. I use similar shading techniques as I do with a regular pencil just by tilting my Apple Pencil or pressing harder on it. Whether I’m sketching the fur of a pet portrait or the fine details of a landscape, the Apple Pencil responds to my every movement, providing a more natural drawing experience. I used my Apple Pencil to create a variety of illustrations in my children’s book, “Mr. Frizz.”
Best Digital Art Software:

Why I Recommend It
Procreate is the app I use to bring all my digital illustrations to life. It’s an incredibly powerful and versatile drawing application that offers a wide range of features that meet the needs of both beginners and professional artists. There’s a learning curve to become proficient in utilizing it; however, once I did, I put it to good use and fell in love with its extensive brush library. With hundreds of brushes to choose from, I can experiment with different textures, effects, and styles, pushing the boundaries of my creativity.
Aside from my children’s book (which is based on one of my chickens), I’ve also designed and illustrated several wall decor pieces for children’s rooms, school libraries, classrooms, and more. Procreate’s layering system allows me to build up my illustrations step by step, making it easier to make adjustments and experiment with different tools and elements that the app offers. I can isolate specific parts of my drawing, apply effects, and make changes without affecting the rest of the artwork—crucial for achieving a professional final product.
I recommend purchasing this Procreate guide for a plethora of information about the app and how to utilize the many tools it offers.
Ease of Use
Each of these art tools provide a user-friendly experience, with one in particular leading the way. The iPad and its touch-screen capabilities develop the pathway for aspiring digital artists. It includes numerous accessibility options and allows users to tailor the device to their specific needs and preferences. Practice making art on your own or give your child the opportunity to embark on their personal artistic adventure.
